there's an old TV series from the US based on a series of 1950's 'film noir' detective novels. i doubt you've heard of it though. Stacy Keach starred as novelist Frank Morrison Spillane aka Mickey Spillane (Frank's pen-name) as the prototypical hard-boiled detective, Mike Hammer, in the 1984-1987 CBS series. there were also several black n white movies of Hammer done in the 50's too. the CBS series actually was set in the 1980's but Keach's 1950's wardrobe, other actors/actresses wardrobes, cinematography, constant (by some critics OVER use) of voice-over narration by Keach, vehicles, sets, buildings from the 1950's and such often confused/confounded and surprised TV viewers. if you think of Tom Selleck's 'Magnum PI' as the quintessential flashy, big money budget, hot skimpily clothed girls, Hawaii setting, ultra modern 1980's private detective TV series... 'Mike Hammer' was the ... hmmm... throwback to the film noir days PI drama from the 80's on TV.

my guess? either the show-runners or the mangaka threw Mike Hama into the mix here as a gag-character/inside joke due to the 'movie production' gathering of characters/suspects... using a Romanji/romanization of Mike Hammer.

one example of why i think it's an inside joke? Spillane himself had several cameo and guest starring appearances on TV and in movies. Spillane once was squeezed in at the last minute on the hit TV police detective series 'Columbo'. the guest star for that week's episode of 'Columbo' (i read somewheres, i can't exactly trust this source... since even I AM TOO YOUNG to have remembered alot of the episodes of 'Columbo' i watched as a kid) had 'broken his leg'... hmm sound familiar? the Conan episode's 'action movie' lead actress broke her leg... so Spillane was called and asked if he'd like to 'stand in for a few scenes'. it turned out to be one of the 'sleeper hit' episodes of that season of Columbo. because Spillane's cameo/guest-starring role was so last minute it wasn't announced publicly until the end credits of that episode.

Spillane even starred as Mike Hammer himself in one smaller budget and often forgotten MH movie.

as for myself, i liked Mike Hammer and Stacy Keach in the role on TV. unfortunately, it typecast him quite hard. so Mr. Keach didn't get alot of jobs till he was 'granpa aged' and got some more work in some sitcoms as ,,, heh,,, yeah the 'granpa character'. :>

I agree, this is my favourite period artstyle-wise. If I look bad at much older episodes I cringe at how cartoony and minimal they were, and I used to find them pretty good for the time. Current style is so smooth and soft on the eyes 😚
